Knowledge extraction from data is one of the most topical directions of research in the areas of mathematics and informatics. The combination of data-driven tools and methods for decision making under uncertainty has become the subject of very active research over the last few years and is particularly relevant.

The present project proposal is a natural continuation of the funded project grant DFNI-I-02-5/2014 “InterCriteria Analysis: A New Approach to Decision Making”, in which a new decision making tool has been proposed and researched, namely the InterCriteria Analysis (ICA).

As a result of the research conducted by now, and of the application of ICA over real problems, we identified the need of further development of the theory of ICA and the two theories which it is based on – the intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFS) and the index matrices (IM). We envisage to conduct new fundamental research on IFS and their extensions (IFS with interval values), IM and their modifications (3D and n-dimensional IM), including the realization of principally new ideas related to these new objects. We expect that the results of these research will lead to development of the ICA theory as well as its software implementation, and will broaden the areas of ICA application. On the other hand, the opportunities that the project will give us will be used for the sustainable promotion and establishment of this novel method developed in Bulgaria among the international scientific community.

In recent years, the application of ICA has produced some significant results in the areas of biology, medicine, ecology, economics, petrochemical industry and others, which drew the attention of fellow researchers from abroad (United Kingdom, Belgium, Poland, Mexico, India, etc.), part of whom got involved in our studies. With the development of the ICA theory, we will have the opportunity in the frames of this project to expand the interdisciplinary applied research in some prospective areas. We emphasis mainly on the application of our novel mathematical method of ICA on real data from the areas of medicine (neurology, oncology, transfusion hematology, and others), sports (physical training and sports achievements), economics (global competitiveness, creditworthiness of small and medium enterprises), as well as some areas of the artificial intelligence (neural networks, metaheuristic algorithms, etc.). The project will provide with give opportunities for academic development and outreach for the junior researchers, PhD students and postdocs in the team, who represent half of the project team members. The results will be published in specialized research journals, indexed in the international scientific databases, and reported in front of seminars and international conferences within the thematic scope of the project goals and activities. In the frames of the projects, lecture courses will be developed for the PhD students of the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and the master and PhD students of the “Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov” University, Burgas, and will be organized the annual editions of the already traditional for the last 22 years International Conference on Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets.
